CSM Course Preparation

Why Preparation is essential

Scrum Alliance Certified ScrumMaster badge

Your Certified ScrumMaster course presents a learning opportunity that you are likely to get only once. A little preparation will go a long way in helping you to get the most out of our course time together.

Not only that, but familiarity with Scrum terms and concepts prior to your training course is required a first of three steps necessary to earn a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification.

Please put aside at least 90 minutes to complete all three of the following steps by at least 24 hours prior to course commencement.

Step 1: Complete the Pre-course Miro Board (live-virtual courses only)

Familiarise yourself with how to use the online whiteboard tool Miro. We will be using this extensively throughout the course.

An essential step is creating a profile for yourself on the Miro board that will be used at the start of the course.

Please complete this step at least 24 hours prior to course commencement. Failure to do so is likely to hold up all participants at the start of the first session.

The link to the Miro Board is available from the Google Calendar invite shared with participants as well as the preparation email sent to all participants.

Step 2: Familiarise yourself with Agile & Scrum Foundations

Please read / watch the following three items carefully, writing notes on what you were not aware of as you go. Brain science shows that writing notes aids retention.

Item A. The Manifesto for Agile Software Development (Links to an external site.)– the original articulation of “Agile”

Approx. reading time: 5 mins (mostly reflection time)

In addition to the four value statements, please study the twelve principles. Please take the time to reflect on what these words mean as well as the degree to which you and those that you work with genuinely share these values and follow these principles over more conventional alternatives.

Item B. The Scrum Guide – November 2020 edition (Links to an external site.)  – the definition of Scrum by its co-creators

Approx. reading time: 25 mins (including note taking)

This is the core body of Scrum knowledge that the course and post-course certification test are based on. With 12 pages of content, it is a short but very important read.

Item C. Scrum Foundations eLearning Series videos (Links to an external site.)  – from Scrum Alliance

Approx. viewing time: 60 mins (including note taking)

Watching these 14 short videos allows you to cover most of the Scrum Foundations learning objectives for your CSM at your own pace in as little as 45 minutes (excluding note taking). Covering the Scrum Theory and Values, Roles, Events and Artefacts modules in this way allows us to use our time together for more in-depth and CSM-specific material.

Step 3: Setup & Test your Technology (live-virtual courses only)

Please also work through our Virtual Classroom Preparation to minimise your chance of a technical issue impeding your access to this learning opportunity.

That’s it for your CSM course preparation. Thanks for being well prepared so that we can maximise our progress and your learning during the course.
